If you get a chance to see it in the early evening the lights illuminating the tower and palace are very atmospheric too. Including some of Westminster bridge and some of the wall on Queens Walk adds extra depth to put you right in the spot I sketched this.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis has become one of my most popular London designs. I think the simple use of blues and oranges along with the sentiment people have for Big Ben at night really make this work as a painting. The rickety fence stretching across really helps the composition, I think they have removed it now but it has so much character I am glad I painted this when I did! The colours of the golden Elizabeth tower (big ben) and Westminster Palace in the sunshine compliment the blues and greens of the sky and Thames and helped me create a soothing painting using pastel shades. I used some Mediterranean green for the water to help convey how glorious this part of London can look in the sunshine. I also love the way the London eye adds some extra perspective and a little visual drama to this view. Finally I added a few boats taking tourists up and down the river. Autumn seemed the perfect time of year to paint for a sunrise, so all the seasons' warm colours of the trees can work against the cool morning sky and the crisp greens of the park's grass. The challenge of this piece was to harmonise the grass, trees and clouds with the strong colours you find in a sunrise without them becoming overpowering. I mixed into each part of the picture a little of the blues, reds and yellows to spread the colours. My aim was to capture the majesty of a glorious sunrise while keeping a relaxing overall image.
