They also redesigned the gardens in 2024, turning them into wonderful places to find a bit of nature and learn a little about evolution too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI drew this in pencil over a few trips standing outside the NHM in winter, wearing gloves. It was chilly 😬 There is so much detail on the exterior of the museum it took me quite a while to finish, all those Victorian details, columns, windows, animal casts... A green sky and purple trees are not what you might expect but they really help this piece stand out and make it visually interesting, which I think is fitting for a modern at gallery 🙂\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore Tate Modern moved in (2000), this building was the Bankside Power Station, providing Londoners with oil powered electricity. It's an amazing re-use for such a building, with the huge interior space now being used for art installations. The light coming through still floods the court so you can almost forget you're inside. The central wide column is the exterior of the Reading Room, now open to view from the inside. It's role as a public library ended in 1997 but it's still interesting to imagine scholars using this in the past, requesting books and waiting for librarians to find them, scaling ladders if necessary!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe challenge in this painting was the roof pattern, my eyes often got a bit lost trying to work out how the structure lines should fit together. If you visit St Paul's you can climb to the top to get some great views across London. You can also get fine views of St Pauls from the top of the One New Change shopping centre just behind the Cathedral. For this design I wanted to give a feeling of flying above London, to capture some of the romance of London, with St Paul's watching over the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the distance you can see the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, Buckingham Palace and Battersea Power Station to the south of the Thames with it's four chimneys. The aim of my landmark series of paintings is to find a simple way to represent them whilst capturing the character that makes each one unique and recognisable, so painting it face on helped a lot, focusing on its silhouette and showing some of its gothic details.
