A greetings card with my illustration of the Palace of Westminster in London, including Big Ben (the Elizabeth Tower). A colourful card of this historical London landmark on the bank of the river Thames.

A few years after starting my London Landmarks series I realised I'd missed one of the most important buildings. Id previously painted the Elizabeth Tower but somehow missed the Palace of Westminster... so here it is.

With a little late evening sun and a some boats zipping up and down the Thames, I thought this was a colourful way to capture one of the most recognised locations in the world. For my London Landmarks series I paint well known buildings with some simplicity of detail, finding the shapes and forms that make them unique. For the Palace of Westminster, this meant simplifying a lot of its gothic details. Finding a way to hint at the intricacy of the architecture without including it allows you to capture the character without flooding the painting with information, leading to a more relaxing picture.
